Japan proposes law to classify more information as confidential

Japan's government has proposed legislation to expand the classification of confidential information and require security clearance checks for employees at companies with access to it. However, opposition lawmakers are concerned that these new rules could infringe on civil liberties. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's administration argues that aligning Japan with western governments will enable greater information sharing with domestic businesses and international allies.
